About us
Our founder Johannes Hemeter, a German émigré, moved to King’s Lynn from London and specialised in sausage casings. In 1914 he combined his work and his passion for fitness and decided to set up a string manufacturing business.
The current premises were completed in 1915, but with the outbreak of war, we were commissioned to make sutures for the army. Johannes’s son John served in the Royal Berkshire Regiment and was awarded the Military Medal for his services.
Sadly, Johannes passed away in 1919. His three sons Charles, Stanley and John picked up where he left off and continued to expand Hemeter and Sons until the 1930s when the company was taken over by Cordes Harmoniques Babolat & Maillot. The company continued to produce musical and tennis strings. Until in the 1990s it changed hands again, and although we remained ‘The Official Wimbledon Stringers’ until the early 2000s, our main focus then turned to making music strings.
Now, as we prepare for our 110th anniversary, and due to popular demand, we will also be making bespoke strings for all stringed instruments both in gut and gut core silver wound!
