Bespoke Strings

Antique instruments are as individual as the hands that have shaped their history. Choosing the correct strings can make a significant difference, not only to tone and response, but also to the tension placed upon the instrument itself.

As a general rule for harps, we recommend Light gauge natural gut strings in order to minimise stress on older instruments. For single-action harps, many specialists also suggest stringing one octave higher than standard — for example, using 1st octave strings in the 2nd octave, 2nd octave strings in the 3rd, and so on.

For very old harps, particularly single-action models, our Gut-Core Silver-Wound strings are a trusted choice for the bass section. Offering warmth, stability, and lower tension, they help preserve both the voice and the integrity of the instrument.

When it comes to early music instruments, preferences in gauge, finish, and feel are often highly specific to the player, maker, or restorer. If you are unable to find the gauge or length you require, please let us know. We will do our utmost to accommodate your needs.
